He completed primary and secondary school (1958) in his hometown, and graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Belgrade (1962). In 1970, he earned his doctorate in international law from Harvard, with his dissertation titled: The Development of Autonomous Law of Foreign Trade within the Framework of Foreign Trade Arbitration – with Special Attention to European Socialist Countries.
In 1962 and 1963, he was a trainee lawyer in Veliki Bečkerek (Zrenjanin), and subsequently, until 1992, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Novi Sad. From 1970, he was an associate professor, from 1975, an extraordinary university professor, and from 1980, a full university professor. In 1992 and 1993, he served as the Minister of Justice in the then Yugoslav government, and from 1993, he became a professor and head of the Department of Law at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. Between 1993 and 1997, he was the Vice-Rector of CEU. Between 1981 and 1998, he lectured several times as a visiting professor at American universities, including Harvard, the University of Florida, and the University of California, Berkeley. From 1999 to 2011, he was a full professor at Emory University School of Law in Atlanta. From 1987, he was a corresponding member of the Vojvodina Academy of Sciences and Arts, and between 1992 and 2003, a corresponding member, and from 2003, a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Between 1969 and 1971, he was the editor-in-chief of Új Symposion, and between 1990 and 1999, he held the same position at the journal Létünk.
He is the (co-)author of numerous university textbooks in Hungarian, Serbian, and English.
