The reader holds in their hands the latest volume on the cultural history of Banat: the history of the Torontál County Hungarian Public Education Association (TMKE), written by Ferenc Németh and Tibor Várady. Ferenc Németh approaches his subject from a cultural-historical perspective, while Tibor Várady explores the legal aspects of the association's authorization and prohibition. The long-standing history of the TMKE entered a new phase in 1918. Its headquarters, Nagybecskerek, was occupied by Serbian troops in the autumn of 1918, and then, along with other territories of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, specifically the Kingdom of Hungary (Southern Bačka, the Baranya Triangle, Prekmurje, the western and central parts of Banat), it was annexed to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes by the Treaty of Trianon. With the change of sovereignty, the minority history of the Hungarians in Banat began. A special relevance is given to the book by the two authors by the fact that exactly one hundred years ago, in 1921, the Torontál County Hungarian Public Education Association was the first among the Hungarian associations in Yugoslavia to begin its operations in the new state.
