He completed primary school in Torontáltorda, high school in Nagybecskerek, and teacher training college in Szabadka (1957). He was a student at the Pedagogical Academy in Szabadka. Between 1957 and 1983, he was a journalist for Magyar Szó, and from 1975 to 1977, he served as deputy editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper. From 1983 to 1993, he was a domestic political commentator for 7 Nap.
In Torontáltorda, a heritage house was established in István Csobra's family home, on the wall of which a memorial plaque to the late journalist was unveiled in 2023.
