Preface/Afterword

A quarter of a century ago, when the Cold War had escalated to such an extent that it threatened a new war catastrophe at any moment, a new factor emerged in international relations: the Non-Aligned Movement. At the first Belgrade summit in 1961, the leaders of the 25 participating countries declared their determination to firmly oppose the division of the world into two opposing blocs, to advocate for the peaceful and just resolution of disputed international issues, and not to tolerate anyone playing irresponsible games with the fate of humanity.

The idea of non-alignment, which emerged at the 1956 meeting of Tito, Nehru, and Nasser on the island of Brioni – precisely because it advocated for a more just and better world for all countries and peoples – found fertile ground across the globe. Today, it has become a non-bloc, independent, and global political factor encompassing nearly two-thirds of the world's countries and almost half of humanity.

The movement has not only grown numerically but has also become a key factor in all initiatives aimed at achieving international peace and security, realizing the principles of active and peaceful coexistence, ensuring the independence and equality of states, disarmament, the faster economic advancement of developing countries, and the establishment of a new international economic order. Through its activities – primarily within the United Nations Organization – it has significantly contributed to solving the pressing problems of the international community and transforming our world.

Over the past quarter-century, the activities of the non-aligned countries have not only proven the legitimacy of the movement and the vitality and timeliness of its principles and goals but have clearly developed into an indestructible force in the struggle for world peace and the good of humanity. In these perilous times, non-alignment – as a result of a new understanding of international relations – also foreshadowed the world of the future, which must be based on the freedom, equality, and constructive cooperation of all countries and peoples. President Tito prophetically articulated this by stating that non-alignment is not only "the conscience of humanity" but also "its future."
