Preface/Afterword

Foreword

Depression is a frequent impediment to successful life management. This is perhaps even more pronounced when it affects a young personality, when, along with weak defense mechanisms, adequate experience is also lacking. Therefore, it is almost inevitable that depression appearing in the most creative period, in youth and middle age, causes the greatest suffering to both the individual and their environment. Depression is a psychological alteration, a treatable, correctable mood disorder, and thus leads to an improvement in the quality of life. For all this, it is very important to first recognize our mood disorder, to move beyond the viewpoint that: “Something is happening to me, I am not like I used to be, but I don't know what it is.” Dr. Sági Zoltán approaches the phenomenon of depression through the eyes of a practicing psychiatrist and psychotherapist. He describes the possible antecedents of its appearance, the conflict situation – and its development – hidden in the deeper layers of the personality, which forms the basis of all depression. Because there is no depression without conflict. And there are countless conflicts in every developing personality. Just think of puberty or adolescence, when the vacuum between the self and the outside world is greatest. Adolescence is a unified but complex, dynamic period in every individual's life, interwoven with profound changes. It is teeming with passions, challenges, rebellions, reckonings, hopes, feelings of omnipotence, love, vulnerability, and not infrequently fear, uncertainty, doubts, but also frustration, brokenness, sadness, and despair. Transformation causes difficulties – or even crises – in every generation. Whether the transformation takes a favorable or unfavorable direction, is progressive or regressive, personality-enriching or blocking, depends on the nature and capacity of the personality structure. Regardless of all this, however, these life stages are already close to the “final destination,” the adult state of the personality. It is therefore doubly important to prevent “injury,” and if it has occurred, to recognize and treat it. The smaller the injury, the smaller the scar it heals with. With knowledge of the manifestations of depression, even the initial forms become more easily noticeable and traceable. And by reviewing the possibilities of treatment, those mystical notions – unfortunately still present in some places – that “mental” illnesses – including depression – are fated and incurable can be dispelled. Many people live their entire lives sick, even though they could be healthy if they believed they could be healthy. Our value system is becoming increasingly performance-oriented, which inevitably fuels the unbridled pursuit of self-realization. However, this is not always successful. Frustration and failures create seemingly irresolvable conflict situations. The consequence: tension, anxiety, depression, and the individual's isolation. Gyula Reviczky expresses this in his poem About Myself:

The sun may shine in the sky;

You see everything in darkness, in black

If you are sad;

While if your mood ignites,

Everything is created for you;

Even in winter you walk in rose gardens,

The sun shines only for you,

And those who live here: angels.

So do not turn blindly

Against the world and its order...

Look at people in such a way,

That the earth is neither good nor crooked;

Neither beautiful nor a dwelling of sorrow,

Only an image, a copy of yourself.

The world is just - a mood

It cannot be emphasized enough that depression is a treatable psychological disorder! And the treatment of depression is a method of preventing another sad phenomenon: suicide. This most severe form of aggression directed by the personality against itself is notoriously not uncommon in our regions. In a very large proportion of cases – though not all – suicide or attempted suicide is preceded by severe depressive waves. From this, it follows that it is useful to associate the concepts of depression and suicide, as we can confidently state that every depression also carries a potential risk of suicide. The risk of suicide, the state before suicide, is recognizable, and there is help! This is the other important message that this book seeks to convey. And it tries to initiate an important thought, namely, that the meaning of birth is life!

Flap Text

The author, as a practicing psychiatrist and psychotherapist, approaches the phenomenon of depression. He describes the possible antecedents of its appearance, the conflict situation – and its development – hidden in the deeper layers of the personality, which forms the basis of all depression. By listing the manifestations of depression, even its initial forms become easily traceable and recognizable.

By describing the possibilities of treatment and cure, he dispels the mystical notions – unfortunately still present in some places – that mental illnesses are fated and incurable.

This, in turn, is the fundamental method of preventing another serious phenomenon: suicide.

The volume is written for the general public in an understandable language. From the perspective of developing the health culture of the Hungarian community in Vojvodina, it fills a gap, as no similar work on this topic by a practicing professional has been published in Hungarian in this region.
