He completed elementary school in Orlód, high school (1954) in Nagybecskerek, and the Hungarian-Serbian program at the Teacher Training College (1956) in Novi Sad. In 1961, he earned a high school Hungarian language teacher's diploma as an external student at the Department of Hungarian Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad. In 1964, he obtained a PhD in literature in Budapest (Hungarian figures in the heroic epics of the Yugoslav peoples). In 1972, he earned a doctorate in literary studies in Novi Sad (Hungarian figures in South Slavic epic folk tradition). From 1956 to 1959, he was a Hungarian and Serbian teacher in Nagybecskerek. Between 1959 and 1972, he was a professional associate at the Provincial Pedagogical Institute in Novi Sad, and from 1964, an educational advisor. From 1973 to 1982, he served as the director of the Textbook Publishing Institute in Novi Sad. From 1983 to 1991, he was the deputy director of the provincial institute for international relations in science, education, culture, and arts. Between 1991 and 1993, he was the director of the Provincial Community for Culture and Education. From 1966 to 1974, he was a visiting lecturer at the colleges in Nagybecskerek and Subotica, from 1968 to 1974 at the Department of Hungarian Studies, University of Novi Sad, from 1974 to 1992 at its Institute of South Slavic Languages, from 1982 to 1984 at the Faculty of Pedagogy in Osijek, and from 1994 to 1996 at the Department of Hungarian Studies, Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade.
